Censorship even in the EU Parliament
EU blocks websites for its own members
by the editorial team of “Ansage.org”
(4 October 2024) The increasingly authoritarian, fundamental rights- and freedom-hostile moloch that the EU headquarters in Brussels has degenerated into has been trying for years – and most recently with increasing severity – to take a tight rein on social media and to censor all content that deviates from the desired narratives as “disinformation”, or at least to brand it with “classifications” via warning notices.
In the case of X/Twitter, this led to a major dispute between Elon Musk and the globalist apparatchiks around the now resigned EU Competition Commissioner Thierry Breton,1 who would prefer to ban the messenger service altogether, following the example of Brazil.2 Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was even temporarily arrested by the French judiciary, which acts in the spirit of the EU, and is currently not allowed to leave France.3 But at least the EU is consistent in one respect: Its zeal for paternalism and censorship extends not only to citizens, but also to its own employees and even elected representatives.
In all seriousness, the EU actually blocks access to selected free media for MEPs in the European Parliament. The US spy programme “Blue Coat”4 is apparently being used as a censorship tool. TikTok, as a Chinese provider, has not been accessible to MEPs on any work equipment or laptops or via Wi-Fi networks for some time, but now this list of those to be blocked has apparently been extended to German-language online media: For example, the Austrian blog “Der Status”5 can no longer be accessed in the EU Parliament either, as the Austrian FPÖ MEP Gerald Hauser reported. The same apparently applies to an unknown number of other free media outlets. The blogs “Ansage!”, “Journalistenwatch” and “PI-News” are not affected (yet).
“To protect you”
When you access the respective deleted pages, you get the friendly Big Brother message: “We blocked this website for you”. Well, what a great service. The EU administration protects the “minor” MEPs just like little children from toxic influences so that their feelings are “not hurt” – a special state care à la North Korea – because they are apparently considered incapable of thinking for themselves.
The censors of von der Leyen make it explicitly clear: “This is not an error message. We have deliberately blocked this page for you so that you will not be hurt!” The reason for the censorship of the free media is left open by Brussels. After the colon, the corresponding place in the declaration remains empty.
The fact that the censorship for freely elected representatives and mandate holders in the EU buildings is supposed to go further than for the EU citizens who elected them (who are “only” affected by the censorship of supposed enemy channels such as “Russia Today” or “China Global Television”) is a scandal and proves the complete contempt for democracy and citizens by the Brussels ideologues and propagandists. The fact that the EU executive apparently denies the representatives of the legislative branch the ability to decide for themselves where and how to inform themselves and to critically assess opinions speaks volumes.
René Aust (AfD), chairman of the newly founded ESN faction (Europe of Sovereign Nations) in the EU Parliament, expressed his extreme displeasure at the Commission’s practice (or that of the Parliament Presidium, should it be responsible for the censorship) to “Ansage!”:
“Neither the EU nor the EU Parliament must protect me from the content of pages I visit voluntarily. However, we all must be protected from the censorship of the EU Parliament and the European Union!”
His fellow parliamentarian Hauser of the FPÖ is also shocked: “This is frightening! This is censorship on a scale that mocks democracy!”
Hauser promised Bernadette Conrads, the managing director of “Der Status”, that he would now submit a parliamentary enquiry. He said that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen should explain “why she is depriving us parliamentarians of freedom of information”.
